Update: Free School Meals

David Babbs (the executive director of 38 Degrees) received a letter from David Laws MP today in response to our free school meals campaign. He has said that the Government will “investigate the case for extending the entitlement to more children”.
He argued that the government is committed to giving free school meals to the most disadvantaged children, and that the welfare reforms are automatically leading to a reassessment of the qualification criteria. He promised that these reforms would not mean that fewer children got free school meals.
We will be keeping a close eye on this as the government decides what to do next. He knows we’re watching, and that we believe that every child in poverty deserves a free school meal.
