Syria crisis: what do you think?

By becky

The civil war in Syria has already claimed over 100,000 lives.  And last Wednesday, the situation got even worse: over 350 people died and at least 3,600 were hospitalised after a suspected chemical attack.

The appalling footage of last week’s attack caused shockwaves around the world. It looks like the UK, the US and others are now planning a military response.

MPs vote tomorrow on possible British involvement.  David Cameron has just announced that he’s seeking approval for military action at the UN Security Council this afternoon. Air strikes on Syrian military targets are possible within the next few days.

One of 38 Degrees’ core values is the promoting of peace and making sure the UK plays a positive, responsible role in the world. So it’s not surprising that many 38 Degrees members have contacted the office team with suggestions for campaigns about Syria.

The situation is complicated, and 38 Degrees members are expressing a variety of different views. At moments like this, one of the strengths of our community is that we can share our thoughts and discuss things together.

Here are some of the questions you might like to discuss:

What do you think about British involvement in air strikes?

What about military aid to Syrian rebels?

Would your view of air strikes change if there was a UN resolution?

Does this remind you of the build up to the Iraq war, or is the situation very different this time?

Should the UK and US wait until the UN report on chemical weapons is published?

Could 38 Degrees campaign on this? Against military action? Or in favour?

Could 38 Degrees help raise money for humanitarian aid e.g. for the 2 million Syrian refugees?

38 Degrees is effective because it belongs to all of us. We make a difference when enough of us agree on what we should be campaigning for and how we should go about it. It might be that this conversation leads to a campaign plan. Or it might we decide it’s not an issue for 38 Degrees to work on right now.

Either way, it’s always good to discuss the issues, see other points of view, and share information.
