Let’s call time on the great British pub scandal
By Rachel Oliver
Campaigns By You is a website where 38 Degrees members can set up a petition themselves, it gives everyone the tools to run campaigns on the issues that matter to them. 38 Degrees is an organisation that promotes democracy, peace, human rights, community, equality, fairness and sustainability.
Back in January, Emily, Campaigns Manager at the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), decided to use Campaigns By You to launch a nation-wide petition – “Let’s call time on the great British pub scandal”. The petition calls on Vince Cable to stick to his promise to introduce a Pubs Watchdog. CAMRA hope a Pubs Watchdog will stop valued pubs closing down because of unfair practices in the sector.
On Wednesday CAMRA representatives, pub campaigners and 38 Degrees members met outside Parliament to hand in their 44,662-strong petition to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Greg Mulholland MP (pictured centre) also presented the petition in to parliament after the sunny photo shoot.
Emily said: “Wednesday’s successful event is a clear indication of the overwhelming public support for pub company reform.
“Thanks to the excellent support from 38 Degrees, CAMRA members and pub campaigners were able to show the Government once again the urgent need for an independent pubs watchdog to govern the behaviour of large pub companies and ensure publicans are treated fairly.”
