Our NHS: “a lucrative £20 billion opportunity”
By Sarah Holtam
This Thursday, hundreds of private health companies are meeting in Birmingham to learn how to get their hands on a “lucrative £20 billion opportunity”. That opportunity? Our NHS. It’ll be on the table at a major event for companies interested in making a profit from our health service.
At the event, private health companies will get tips to help them cherry-pick NHS services to make a profit from. This event is about encouraging privatisation at the heart of the NHS that we know doesn’t work. So 38 Degrees members and other partners are going to let them know we’re watching.
We’re all proud of our NHS. It’s best healthcare system in the world. So we’re going along to the conference to show profiteering companies that if they want to break up our NHS, they’ll have a fight on their hands.
38 Degrees members will be a strong presence outside the conference – making it clear to everyone going in and out that our NHS isn’t a business opportunity.
Where: International Convention Centre Plaza, Broad St, Birmingham, B1 2EA
When: 9.30am – 11.30am Thursday 9th July
To RSVP, and for more details, click here.
We’ll start gathering at 9am to catch people as they arrive at the conference. It’ll be a fun, peaceful event – we’ll wear t-shirts and hold up banners to make sure we’re seen. It’s being organised by Keep Our NHS Public with other partners like the People’s Assembly. Someone from the 38 Degrees staff team will be there too with a sack full of t-shirts.
When 38 Degrees members work together, we can fight companies who want to put profit over people. Last week in Lancashire, thousands of us put pressure on the council to prevent dirty energy companies from fracking – and we won. Let’s use that strength to stop companies that want to privatise our NHS.
