We’ve beaten fracking’s more evil twin
By 38 Degrees team
People power got the Scottish Government to ban the dangerous and dirty form of blasting for gas called UCG.
Yesterday, energy companies could burn coal deep beneath the ground, using an experimental process linked to toxic waste, air pollution and damage to buildings.
People power has made that change. Just in the past fortnight 38 Degrees members sent 14,000 emails to SNP politicians telling them to ban this dirty way of getting energy. It worked!
Together, 38 Degrees members, communities and environmental campaigners got fracking banned in Scotland. Now we’ve seen off its even more evil twin UCG as well.
When we speak together we make real change happen.
So now what? Well, the bans on fracking and UCG are only temporary. There’s a public consultation on them coming. Together we’ll need to make sure our voices are heard.
A key part of this campaign was started by a member, Juliana Muir, on behalf of the Our Forth local campaign group. Her petition got nearly 8,000 signatures and helped make this issue impossible for the Scottish Government to ignore.
If you’d like to start a campaign, it’s really simple to get started and only takes a few minutes. It can be on any issue that matters to you. Who knows? Maybe the next victory we celebrate will be your campaign!
PS: Lots and lots of other organisations have worked hard for this, including Friends of the Earth Scotland, WWF Scotland, Our Forth, Clacks Against Unconventional Gas Extraction and SMAUG among others.
