Petition hand in – End opencast coal for good
By Safiah Fardin
Yesterday members from the Coal Action Network travelled to Westminster to hand in a petition signed by 55,000 members of 38 Degrees to James Brokenshire MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
The petition is calling for James Brokenshire MP to stop two new opencast coal mines going ahead. If the mines go ahead it could see our precious countryside and coastlines damaged for generations, and our environment put at risk – all for a fuel so dirty, the government promised to phase it out by 2025.
The minister’s decisions on the future of two coal mines at Bradley in Pont Valley, County Durham and Druridge Bay in Northumbria, are expected shortly.
Over 55,000 of us are calling for him to do the right thing and stick to the government’s promise to phase out coal by 2025. If you’ve not yet added your name, there’s still time!
