Free School Meals Vouchers Victory
By Tom Kuehnel
We did it! Yesterday, we helped force the government into yet another u-turn – the ‘woefully inadequate’ parcels first approach to free school meals has been abandoned. Boris Johnson announced that parents will be given food vouchers again, instead of food parcels and with it, the dignity and freedom to choose what to feed their children.
After pictures from parents circulated social media showing the shocking contents in these parcels, more than 50,000 of us signed a petition and joined celebrities, businesses and politicians. Together, we successfully called on the government to fix this food parcels fiasco for families up and down the country.
38 Degrees members also played an important role in making sure children didn’t go hungry last Christmas and, along with this latest win, showed the power that people can have when we come together, make our voices heard and demand change for the better.
But with the coronavirus pandemic creating and exacerbating problems for millions of people around the country, we can’t afford to stop now. From our campaign to stop the evictions ban loophole, to ensuring every child has the internet access and devices needed to learn during lockdown, we can only win these campaigns with your help.
38 Degrees, is made up of millions of people all across the UK, taking action on the issues that matter most to each of us. If you want to have your say on the issues that are important to you and what you’d like to see campaigns on in 2021, you can join the conversation on our Facebook page.
