We lit up London to tell Elon Musk that our democracy is NOT for sale

By 38 Degrees team

Last night, we lit up London landmarks with a message that the world’s richest man – and the politicians who must stand up to him – couldn’t ignore.

As Big Ben struck 10pm, the Houses of Parliament became the canvas for a striking image: stacks of hundred-dollar bills stamped with Elon Musk’s face, and a bold message from the British public beamed onto the heart of our democracy:

“Parliament: Block billionaires from buying elections.”

We also lit Tower Bridge with the same powerful projection – all part of a bold stunt funded by 4,148 of 38 Degrees supporters up and down the country who chipped in a few pounds to make it happen.

Why? Because we cannot let Parliament sit idly by while our democracy is under attack.

Our bold, daring stunt got splashed across the media, and our video reached tens of thousands of people on social media.

The stunt came on the same day MPs debated new laws to tighten the rules around political donations. This includes calls to cap how much can be given, and who can donate.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Elon Musk was busy handing out million-dollar cheques to voters in Wisconsin. That’s not a dystopian script – it’s real. And it’s a warning of what could happen here unless we act fast.

We know Musk’s eyes are on the UK. And with loopholes in our political system that could let foreign billionaires pour money into our elections and essentially buy the outcome, the threat is real. That’s why 38 Degrees supporters are speaking out loudly and clearly.

It started with an idea: if Elon Musk wants to play dirty with our democracy, we’d play bold. Working with some of the UK’s top projection artists, the team at 38 Degrees planned a covert operation – complete with secret locations and tight schedules.

This wasn’t just about making a splash. It was about making sure those in power know that the British public is watching – and that we won’t stay silent while billionaires try to buy influence.

That’s people power in action. Musk might have billions of dollars. But we have something stronger: a movement.

Already, over 160,000 people have signed our petition demanding the Government shut down foreign money in UK politics. More than 86,000 have added their names to an open letter telling Musk to keep his tweets – and his cash – out of British democracy. And now, we’ve taken the fight right to the doorstep of Westminster.

This is just the start. The more of us who understand what’s at stake, the harder it will be for Musk and people in power to ignore us.
