Stop the cruel cuts: landmarks lit up with clear message in PM’s constituency
By Kate Wilsea
Over the course of Wednesday night a series of powerful messages were projected onto key landmarks in Sir Keir Starmer’s constituency of Holborn and St Pancras, sending the Prime Minister a message he can’t ignore.
The projections were made possible by thousands of members of the 38 Degrees community who have chipped in small donations, on average £8.45.
The stark images showed the number of people in the constituency- set to be hit by the cuts emblazoned on key buildings with the message ‘Keir Starmer, stop the cruel cuts’.
This stunt comes after more than 119,000 of us signed our petition calling on the Government to reverse the planned cuts to welfare benefits, expected to be debated in parliament in the coming weeks.
The government’s own projected figures show 250,000 people could be pushed into poverty as a result, including 50,000 children, whilst official figures also show that in the PM’s constituency alone, 7,765 people currently claim PIP.
There is increasing public and parliamentary pressure for the Government to rethink their plans, with a reported 80 Labour MPs – a fifth of the party – having already set out their opposition to the move.
Matthew McGregor, CEO of 38 Degrees said:
“In constituencies across the country – including right here, in the PM’s own constituency of Holborn and St Pancras – thousands of sick and disabled people are terrified of the heartless cuts about to be imposed upon them. None of us know when we might need a safety net, so it’s no wonder that hundreds of thousands of people have spoken out against these plans, and thousands more have chipped in to bring a message to Holborn and St Pancras that Keir Starmer can’t ignore: stop these cruel cuts, protect the sick and vulnerable, and tax the super rich instead.”
Hundreds of people from every region across the UK have shared their testimony with 38 Degrees on what these cuts would mean for their lives, for example; Sue, 67, from Aldershot who is currently in full-time employment as an administrator. “I have MS and manage to work still with assistance. If my benefits are stopped I wouldn’t be able to work, and would lose my independence.”
