A Historic Win for Workplace Justice: Abusive NDAs Banned!
By Charlie Hind
After months of tireless campaigning, petitioning, and collective action, the Government has announced a monumental change that will transform workplace justice in the UK forever: a new clause in the Employment Rights Bill will ban the use of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) in cases of workplace harassment and discrimination.
This win shows the immense power that can be achieved when people come together. 93,577 of us signed Louise Haigh’s petition, which we then took directly to Parliament alongside the incredible campaigners at Can’t Buy My Silence, who have been fighting tirelessly to ban NDAs for years. Now, it’s on course to be written into law. We also helped run a crucial event where MPs could speak directly to victims, hearing their powerful stories firsthand. Thanks to this collective effort, the Government has listened, and acted.
This new clause is set to be a game-changer. It will directly stop abusive employers from using NDAs to silence victims of harassment and discrimination. But it goes even further than initially hoped. Crucially, it will also protect witnesses, dismantling the toxic cover-ups that have allowed so much harm to fester for far too long.
Many have heard the heartbreaking stories – or perhaps experienced them firsthand. Workers harassed, bullied, even assaulted, then forced into silence. Individuals unable to speak to their own families, their therapists, their friends, all because of an unjust piece of paper. People who have lost their voice, their jobs, their trust. No one should ever have to endure that again.
This is not just a policy change; it’s a historic shift towards a fairer, safer, and more accountable workplace for everyone.
This monumental achievement proves that when thousands unite, when voices are lent to those who have been silenced, true change can be created. This is what people power looks like.
