Betting shops: victory!
By Amy Lockwood
Great news! The government has committed to change planning laws on betting shops. Councils will be given the power to step in to stop clusters of betting shops taking over our high streets. We’ll finally have a say in how many betting shops our towns should have.
The whole plans haven’t been published yet, but it looks like this is a great victory! Local communities and councils will get the chance to raise objections when new betting shops are proposed in their areas.
Thousands of 38 Degrees members wrote to Eric Pickles MP, the minister responsible. We came together in support of local councils and groups like Local Works and the Campaign for Fairer Gambling, who’d been pushing for this change. Proving again that when people work together, we can make positive change happen.
Here’s to being part of another great victory for people power!
