Fracking in Scotland

By becky

The central belt is under threat. Fracking companies want to turn the heart of Scotland into a gas field. Right now councils can give permission to frack to anyone they want, and fracking companies are setting their sights on the central belt.

But a massive wave of public opposition could force councils across Scotland to say no to fracking companies for good. 38 Degrees member Clare has set up a petition to stop fracking in Scotland’s central belt.

Please can you sign her petition right now.

Fracking is a dangerous way of getting oil and gas out of the ground. Fossil fuels cause climate change, and fracking pollutes our water and can cause earth tremors.

One fracking company, Ineos, is even trying to bribe its way through the planning system by offering a tiny share of the money made to local communities. But many believe that the central belt is too precious to be fracked.

Here’s what Clare says:

“This is one of the most dangerous practices out there, and we want it banned in Scotland. It poisons the water table, could cause tremors, and destroys the ecosystem. We have to protect one of the purest water supplies in the world.”

38 Degrees members in Wales have already persuaded Wrexham council to reject fracking companies who wanted to drill in their countryside. [4] Now if enough of us come together in Scotland we can persuade our councils to fight off the frackers too.
