Who are Octopus Energy?

Launched in 2015 Octopus Energy are a smaller energy company taking a totally different approach to the Big Six. Their deals do not have exit fees. They believe that customers should stay with companies because they want to be with them, not because they are locked in.

Octopus Energy is rated 5/5 stars on the independent reviews site, Trustpilot, with email support 7 days a week (usually responding within the hour – but please forgive them if they’re a little bit slower when the 38 Degrees onslaught of members hits – it’ll still be pretty good). You can even talk to them on Facebook Messenger.

Who are the Big Deal and what's their relationship to 38 Degrees?

The Big Deal is a for-profit business that specialises in collective energy switching. It runs regular campaigns highlighting the wrongs of the energy industry and fighting for consumer rights. Big Deal campaigns have demanded fair prices from suppliers, transparency from comparison sites and negotiated money-saving deals.

38 Degrees evaluated a few different potential partners for the energy switch before selecting The Big Deal. Our top priority was to identify an ethical and effective business who could help 38 Degrees members make collective consumer decisions. We decided to work with The Big Deal because it combines industry expertise with a commitment to people-power and consumer rights.

Part of the reason 38 Degrees members are working with the Big Deal to negotiate this switch is to make sure 38 Degrees remains completely independent. There are always risks involved in being part of a switch as a people-powered organisation, as it involves making deals (albeit people-powered deals) with a company. Working with The Big Deal means 38 Degrees doesn’t risk our independence by entering into a direct financial relationship with an energy company.

But there are still other risks to be aware of, and other choices to make. It’s standard practice when a customer switches energy company for the organisation that’s prompted the switch to get paid commission. If 38 Degrees entered into a direct relationship with one energy company, this could be as high as £40 per switch. Working with the Big Deal means that this commission is shared, and 38 Degrees receives £15. When surveyed, 38 Degrees members have said they’re happy for 38 Degrees to receive this money as it can be spent on campaigning and doesn’t come with any strings attached. But we still need to be careful we don’t get dependent on it.

The founder of the Big Deal, Henry de Zoete sits on the 38 Degrees board. He became a board member in 2015. He brings expertise on people powered switching as well as being a strong supporter of 38 Degrees’ mission. 38 Degrees has strong policies in place to avoid this influencing any decisions about the future of the partnership with the Big Deal – including full disclosure of all board members’ interests and strong conflict of interest rules. These rules mean that if the board ever discusses the Big Deal partnership, Henry has to leave the room and doesn’t have a vote.

Henry de Zoete previously worked in government as an advisor to the former Education Secretary Michael Gove. You can read more about Henry’s past career here. The Big Deal has been endorsed by figures across the political spectrum (including Lib Dem leader Tim Farron MP and Angus MacNeil, Scottish National Party MP and chair of the Energy Select Committee). 38 Degrees is satisfied that Henry, and The Big Deal, are independent of all political parties.

Overall, the office team reckons this adds up to a sensible and healthy approach to energy switching. But that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. If you have suggestions for how it could be better, please get in touch.

Will 38 Degrees make money when I switch?

For every switch 38 Degrees gets money to put back into campaigns our members care about. If you’re with Octopus now, and you take this deal, 38 Degrees will get £10.60, if you’ve switched with us previously 38 Degrees receives £21.25, and if you’re completely new to switching, 38 Degrees gets £18.75. The Big Deal makes around the same.

What additional environmental benefits does the tariff have? (100% renewable)

Octopus Energy’s backer, Octopus Investments, are the UK’s largest investor in solar farms, with over £1.5 billion invested to date. Octopus-funded farms generate 40% of the UK’s large-scale solar – enough to power over a quarter of a million homes.

.

The Process

How will I know if this is the right deal for me?

During the process of taking the deal, you’ll be able to compare it to everything else in the market. This is what is known as a ‘whole of market’ comparison. That way you can tell if for your usage levels and your region of the country it is the best deal for you. If it isn’t it will be clearly be shown and you can take another deal if you’d rather.

How much you will save depends on how much energy you use. You’ll find out exactly how much you will save before deciding whether to switch. And the whole of market comparison will also show you if there is another deal that is cheaper given the amount of energy you use.

That sounds great, how do I take the deal?

It’s really easy to switch – you can follow the link in the email you received, and there’ll be instructions every step of the way. It’ll ask for some basic details, like your postcode and some info about your energy usage. You’ll then be given a personalised quote for the tariff, plus your projected saving – there’ll be no obligation to switch.

You then decide whether to switch to our exclusive deal or to stay with your current company. If you go for it then all you need to do is add your direct debit details into the site and you’re all set.

Octopus will then contact your existing supplier and request to transfer your account. Assuming there are no problems, this should take about two to four weeks.

Will an engineer visit my house to change the meter, cables, and other equipment?

No, no one will have to visit your house or change any equipment at all.

I’m worried that my power will run out during the changeover – can this happen?

No! There will be no interruption to your electricity or gas supply.

What if I want to speak to someone or have some problems with my switch?

If you want to talk to someone or are having any issues with your switch then you can call our switching experts the Big Deal on 020 3870 2039 and they’ll aim to get any problems resolved and answer any questions you have.

Alternatively visit The Big Deal support centre where you can ask any questions to their support team.

When will my first Direct Debit go out?

Octopus energy will take your first Direct Debit on your supply start date, and monthly on your requested day thereafter. Since your annual usage is estimated at the beginning, having some opening credit can smooth any wobbles in your consumption.

How does this help the environment? (100% renewable deal)

When you switch your energy supplier the actual energy being supplied to your house does not change, but you still benefit the environment by switching. Here’s how:

  • Everyone’s energy comes from the National Grid – which is a mix of dirty energy and clean energy. Like a mucky pond.
  • A green energy supplier will match the energy you use with clean energy it puts back onto the grid. It’s like pouring fresh water into that mucky pond. In the process, we start to clean up the fuel mix on the grid and lower the UK’s carbon intensity.
  • Energy suppliers either generate renewable energy themselves or buy it from renewable sources.
  • By buying this energy, you are encouraging more renewable generation, increasing investment in clean energy.
  • The more people that switch, the higher the demand for clean energy, meaning more clean energy will be generated.

Octopus Energy has direct agreements with renewable energy generators across the country, paying them for the energy they generate. For example, the company has PPAs (purchase power agreements) in place with Molland Solar Farm in Devon and many others like it.

What about Warm Home Discount?

Octopus Energy don’t currently offer the Warm Home Discount.

Octopus Energy customers who are eligible will be entitled to the Government mandated programs which are:

Cold weather payment https://www.gov.uk/cold-weather-payment
Winter fuel payment https://www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment
Affordable Warmth Obligations https://www.gov.uk/energy-company-obligation/eco

Can you give me the exact prices – unit rates etc?

We sure can. We love the details as much you do! Here is a table with unit rates in every region. These prices include VAT at 5%.

If you don’t know your region don’t worry, our comparison engine automatically detects your region based on the postcode you enter.

Do Octopus Energy offer Feed-In Tariffs (FITs)?

Octopus don’t support feed-in tariffs at the moment. You can still switch and save, though – and you should be able to keep your feed-in tariff with your current supplier.

What if I decide I no longer want the deal?

Don’t worry at all – there is a 14 day cooling off period from the day you apply. So you can cancel during that period if you wish to. If you decide after that you want to leave you can do so at any time as there are no fees for leaving early.

.

Can I switch if I...

I’m already an Octopus Energy customer. Can I take the deal?

Yes. If you’re an existing Big Deal member on an Octopus Energy deal then we’ll email you a special link you can click on to take the deal. Alternatively if you’re an existing Octopus Energy customer you can take the deal by emailing hello@octopus.energy. Make sure you say you want the special Big Deal negotiated price!

I am on a fixed-term contract with another supplier. Can I switch?

Yes – you can always leave your contract.

If you’re within 49 days of the end of your fixed term contract with exit fees you can switch WITHOUT having to pay any exit fees.

If before then, you may incur exit fees (usually about £30 per fuel) which you should check with your supplier. It may still be worth switching given how cheap our deal is.

I only recently switched – can I take your deal?

Yes – if you switched less than 14 days ago, then you are within the “cooling-off” period and you can switch without incurring exit fees. You will have to cancel your previous switch first, though!

If it has been longer than that, then you may well incur exit fees if you’re on a fixed-term tariff (usually about £30 per fuel) which you should check with your supplier. It may well be cheaper to switch even with exit fees.

My current tariff is about to end. Can I still switch?

Yes. Once your current plan ends, you will most likely be moved onto a standard tariff which you can immediately terminate as it will have no exit fees.

In fact, you can terminate it at no cost to yourself – no exit fees – anytime 49 days before it ends.

I rent my home, can I switch to this deal?

Yes, if you pay the bill directly then you can always switch your energy supplier. But it’s always a good idea to let your landlord know you’ve switched.

Does it matter where I live?

This deal is available in England, Scotland and Wales. The cost of the deal does depend on the region of the country you live in. Unfortunately, the deal is not available for customers in Northern Ireland.

I own a small business, can I switch to this deal?

Unfortunately, this deal is only available to domestic households, but we can still help businesses too.

I only want to switch my gas or electricity supplier, not both – can I switch?

This special deal is available for electricity only as well as dual fuel customers. So if you want to switch only your electricity that’s fine too, but you can’t switch only your gas.

What happens if I have a smart meter?

At the moment, if you have a smart meter installed, Octopus Energy will treat it like a normal meter. They will still ask for monthly meter readings, but these are very quick and easy to do – it takes less than a minute through their website or via the link provided in reminder emails.

I pay using a prepayment meter. Can I switch?

Unfortunately, you can’t switch to this deal if you’re on a prepayment meter. But if you go to www.thebigdeal.com and select prepayment meter as your current payment method you can see every deal on the market for prepayment customers.

I've gone through this help page and my question wasn't answered!
