Save The Shama’s Palm Trees
By Nicole G
There’s a new petition on the 38 Degrees website, started by someone who lives near you, which you might be interested in:
SAVE THE SHARMA’S PALM TREES
Campaign created by Richard Spreadbury
To: Kirklees Council Planning
What: Leave the illuminated palm trees alone
Why is this important: These decorative trees bring a ray of sunshine into my boring daily commute from Spen into Leeds. Why do the Council waste public money getting involved in such trivial matters?
From the Huddersfield Daily Examiner:
“A restaurant’s palm trees will have to be “felled”, by order of planning chiefs. Glow-in-the-dark plastic palm trees were installed in the car park of Shama. The inspector noted the ‘trees’ were “not subtle features” in the street scene.”
The restaurant owner said:
“We tried to tidy it up by putting some nice trees up; they were quite expensive. Regular customers commented that they liked them and our neighbours said they were okay. They’re not very bright, they’re no brighter than the street lights.”
