Scrap the Plans to Raise Taxes on Small Businesses
By Nicole G
Small family businesses are being slapped with unfair higher taxes from the government. Because of their tax hike rules, the plan will unfairly squeeze small businesses like local corner shops and town-centre butchers and grocers, but not huge retailers like Amazon.
The government’s under fire from business leaders, the media, and politicians to ditch the plans. It’s been in the news for days now – the government’s desperate for it to disappear. They don’t want to be on the wrong side of small businesses. So a huge petition, signed by thousands of people, would keep the pressure on.
If you don’t want small businesses to be crippled by the government, please add your name now. It’ll only take 30 seconds:
To add insult to injury, under the same plans internet giants like Amazon would get to pay less tax. It’s because the rules are about tax hikes for businesses in busy places. So in town centres, where most small family businesses are based, they get slapped with more tax. But out-of-town warehouses, where most giant companies are based, get to pay less.
Neil Whitham, who runs a fish and chip shop in St Ives, would be hit by the “totally unfair” new rates. He’ll have to pay thousands more pounds of tax a year – and is worried that businesses just surviving will have to close.
38 Degrees members believe that tax is important – it pays for our NHS, education for everyone and a safety net for those who need it. But the government’s current plans just don’t make sense. Small, family businesses shouldn’t be punished while giant companies are rewarded.
PS: Once the petition reaches 100,000 signatures the 38 Degrees staff team will hit the phones to tell the media about the growing public pressure. So please will you add your name to the petition now? https://link.38degrees.org.uk/scrapfd5a
