Jack the Ripper Museum Protest
By Barnaby Lewer
Yesterday afternoon, 38 Degrees members joined with other organisations at a protest against the new Jack the Ripper museum in London’s East End. Over 200 people were there to demand that the museum honour it’s original planning permission as a celebration of women’s history and not their violent murder.
38 Degrees member Becky started her petition through Campaigns By You and it has now reached over 4,500 signatures. Becky was asked to speak to the crowd and the news of how many people support the campaign raised the loudest cheer of the afternoon.
Here’s some pictures of the protest…
You can still sign Becky’s petition https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/celebrate-suffragettes-not-serial-killers as she aims to increase the pressure on Tower Hamlets council with a petition hand in later in the week.
You can also read Becky’s reasons for starting the campaign as she was asked to write a guest piece for the Independent newspaper: http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/a-promised-womens-museum-opens-as-a-jack-the-ripper-exhibit-tonight-and-i-wont-take-it-lying-down-10436860.html
