Delegated Powers: Committee Inquiry
By Becca McCarthy
Do you want to swap murky backroom deals in Brussels for more of the same in Westminster? Theresa May does. She’s demanding new powers to rewrite UK laws after Brexit; behind closed doors and without proper debate or votes in Parliament.
Right now, a committee of Lords are asking the public what we think. An enormous petition could take centre stage and prove that the public are against this plan. It could convince Theresa May to ditch her power grab altogether.
The committee’s inquiry closes on Thursday, so we haven’t got long. Will you sign the petition right now? It takes less than 30 seconds:
Together, we’ve already landed a blow to Theresa May’s plans to bypass Parliament. A staggering 320,000 of us have already signed the petition, and thousands more of us have emailed our MPs and called on them to speak out. And our MPs are starting to listen – politicians from all parties have stood up in Parliament to criticise the plans.
But this is going to come down to the wire, and a handful of votes could be the difference between winning or losing. It means we need to take every chance we get to speak out against Theresa May’s power-grab. Right now, the Lords committee’s inquiry is our big opportunity.
