January Campaign Highlights
By 38 Degrees team
It’s been a busy start to the year. Together with our incredible supporters, 38 Degrees has been making a huge impact – and it’s only February!
Life can be hectic, and it can be easy to miss the progress we make together along the way. So let’s celebrate some of the wins and amazing milestones achieved recently:
A win for the bees!
For the first time in five years, toxic bee-killing pesticides won’t be used on any fields in England. Year after year, the previous Government ignored their own scientists and allowed the use of these harmful chemicals, despite mass pressure from the 38 Degrees community and millions of others. But this year, things changed.
Over 116,000 signed the petition demanding this new Government take action. And they listened. Keir Starmer and his Ministers have kept the full ban in place, proving that together, a difference has been made!
Fighting for our NHS
Earlier this month, we delivered a 250,000-strong petition to Downing Street, calling on the Government to save NHS dentistry. One of our supporters, Tony, joined us – his life was saved by an NHS dentist who caught early signs of cancer. It was a powerful moment that made headlines, and it’s showing politicians that people like you won’t stay silent when our healthcare is under threat. And just before Christmas, we made sure the Government heard over 40,000 of our voices on the future of the NHS, pushing for the changes we desperately need.
Calling for sewage-free rivers and seas
The fight to clean up rivers and seas is ramping up. Over 50,000 took part in a consultation for the new Water Bill, submitting a report that could force polluting water companies to finally clean up their act. Then, hundreds of supporters emailed their MPs asking them to attend a special anti-sewage event in Parliament – and 52 MPs showed up! Together, it’s clear to the Government that the public wants real action on sewage.
Saving a beloved cinema
Last week, the Prince Charles Cinema team launched a petition on the 38 Degrees website to rally support as they face threats of closure from their landlord. In just 24 hours, a staggering 125,000 signed – making headlines across the press! Now, the 38 Degrees community is firmly with the Prince Charles Cinema team, ready to fight for its survival.
Showing Elon Musk the door
Elon Musk has been meddling in British politics – from suggesting the US should “liberate” the UK to talking about donating millions to back Nigel Farage. Over 144,000 have demanded the Government tighten rules on political donations, so foreign billionaires can’t play with democracy. And a poll we ran with Survation showed that the majority of the public agrees!
The Government has responded: they’ve sent a letter repeating their promise to protect politics from foreign interference and said they’re working on new plans they’ll share soon. Now the pressure is on to make sure changing the rules becomes a top priority.
If you made it this far, we’re sure you’ll agree that this has been an exceptional start to the year! But we wouldn’t expect anything less from our unstoppable community. 38 Degrees is named after the tipping point at which snow comes together to form an avalanche. Every action we take adds up, until we become an unstoppable force of change.
There’s still work to be done, but for now, let’s celebrate every win and every member of this wonderful community.
