Our impact in March
By 38 Degrees team
Reading the news can feel overwhelming right now. Sometimes the day’s news might suggest there’s not much to be hopeful about. But there is so much amazing progress on campaigns – some big, some small, ALL proving that even when things feel upside-down, there are millions of us who want to build a better world.
The stories below are proof that we’re not alone – that together we are pushing back against the powerful people who want to divide us. So today, if you’re feeling overwhelmed reading the news, take pride in what we’ve pulled off together in difficult times:
CAMPAIGN WIN! 🎉 Stop shady crypto cash flooding our politics
Last week, the Prime Minister announced that dodgy crypto donations to UK political parties will be BANNED, stopping shady donors buying influence over our politics and lives. Billionaires at home and abroad wanted nothing more than to funnel cash into the pockets of politicians and parties behind closed doors. And many experts sounded the alarm about the risk to our national security when the Reform UK Party became the first and only Westminster party to accept these crypto donations last year. But thanks to the 94,380 of us who demanded a ban on crypto donations, we kept this high on the agenda and now the Government has acted!

Your say on the future of the BBC
The Government has just run a huge public consultation called the BBC Charter Review, giving us a rare chance to decide how the BBC is funded and run over the next decade. And our community certainly did not miss this shot! A whopping 78,672 of us filled out our big BBC survey, and because hundreds of supporters took the time to email local MPs, politicians from five different parties came to our event in Parliament. They heard exactly what we want, and even stopped to pose with our Tardis and vintage broadcasting mic. To make sure no one in Westminster could ignore us, we splashed those exact survey results in the i paper on the very same day!
We published some powerful research
If you ever find yourself shouting at the TV when the media doesn’t focus enough on the real struggles we are all facing, please know you are not alone. To cut through that noise, our community just published ground-breaking new research with Persuasion UK. It proves exactly what we have been saying all along: people who support different political parties are united by a frustration with the current pace of change and crying out for higher pay, lower bills, and more of a focus on the cost of living crisis. Together, we are urging politicians to look away from divisive headlines and focus on the real, human issues that matter to all of us.
Taking a stand against greedy energy giants
For years, 38 Degrees supporters have stood up to the sheer greed of massive energy companies. It’s heartbreaking that we still have to. Right now, with the terrible crisis in the Middle East raging on, these giants are literally making money off global misery. But we aren’t letting them get away with it. Because of the strength of this community, 38 Degrees has just signed a powerful joint letter led by Tax Justice UK demanding action which hit the headlines.

Fighting for clean water
We’re all sick of seeing the beaches and rivers we love treated like open sewers just so water bosses can pocket millions. So when the Channel 4 docu-drama, Dirty Business, aired, our community teamed up with Surfers Against Sewage to do something about it.
A massive 235,458 of us signed a mega petition demanding the Government steps in, take sback control of this broken system, and finally puts our health before profit. And the pressure is working! Labour MP Sean Woodcock just published an article demanding tough action on failing water companies, directly citing the research our community put right in front of him.

38 Degrees supporters feeding our bees this spring!
Not all our impact is aimed at changing policy and making headlines – sometimes 38 Degrees supporters band together to make a difference in other ways. It’s why, this month, tens of thousands of us have signed up to get a free packet of bee-friendly seeds in the post to help our buzzy friends survey and thrive. In the past few decades 97% of our wildflower meadows have vanished here in the UK, but as a community we’re doing our bit to try to replace them!

Here’s to everyone who continues to take action for a kinder, fairer, greener world!
