Our impact in June
By 38 Degrees team
June has been another massive month for our community. When politics can feel chaotic and progress can feel slow, it is so important to remember what we can do when we stand up for each other. Every single action you take, every time you email your MP or chip in, it all proves that we can make ourselves heard and push for the real change our country needs. Here is a quick look at what we’ve been up to this month:
Protecting our endangered swifts
Swifts are currently on the red list of endangered birds, with their numbers dropping by a heartbreaking two-thirds in the last 20 years. While thousands of us are busy pushing the Government to make nesting bricks mandatory in all new homes, we also found a wonderfully simple way to help right now. Because swifts often crash into glass windows, 4,000 of us have put up special anti-collision stickers to guide them safely away. It’s a small, beautiful way to protect these amazing birds as they migrate back to the UK for the summer.

Honouring Sir David
Our campaign to secure a permanent statue for Sir David Attenborough hit a massive milestone this month. After more than 89,000 of us signed the petition launched by MP Johanna Baxter, MPs stepped up to debate the monument in Parliament. The news was picked up by media outlets across the UK, with a minister backing the idea of a monument to honour his incredible legacy.

Demanding real change in Makerfield
During the Makerfield by-election, we stepped up to keep the focus firmly on the real issues that matter to people. We ran public research showing that what local voters really want politicians to focus on is the cost of living “so we can afford to actually have a life.” Our findings made a massive splash, leading to a special feature on ITV News, and we also showed that most people are completely turned off by candidates posting offensive stuff online. Together, we are keeping the pressure on and making sure politicians can’t just ignore the everyday struggles families are facing right now.

Justice for Windrush survivors
On Windrush Day, campaigners from the Windrush Justice Community Collective took their fight for real justice straight to the Government’s doorstep, backed by a petition that has now grown to over 44,000 signatures. The hand-in was covered by the Mirror, highlighting the group’s ongoing campaign for the compensation and support they were promised. It was a powerful moment led by survivors, making it clear to the Government that the campaign for full accountability is still going strong.

Standing up for our local communities
Incredible victories are being won locally right across the country, driven by passionate people standing up for the places they live. In London, local residents campaigning to Buy Back Brixton received huge coverage as they launched a competitive community bid to save the historic market from private firms. In Scotland, parents and locals rallied together to save a beloved nursery in Ayr from sudden closure, while in Lancashire, dedicated residents gathered to protest plans to fell local historic lime trees.
There have been huge wins spearheaded by local heroes too, from saving Putney Pool and stopping Cardiff University from removing library study spaces, to ensuring a much-loved street sweeper in Hackney gets to stay on her regular patch. It just goes to show what happens when local people step up to protect the things that matter most to their communities.
Thank you to our donors
We want to say a huge thank you to every single one of you who chipped in this month to make all of this possible. We don’t take a penny from governments or corporations, which means we rely hugely on small donations from incredible people like you. It’s this independence that means we can always stay completely focused on fighting for the things that actually matter to our communities.
