Leaders: What Will You Do For Children In Care?
By Alexander Lusted
So far 38 Degrees members have done great work in promoting the issues we all care about in this election.
In the Leaders debate on April 2nd the NHS was one of the flagship questions, and we got a chance to hear what our would-be leaders intend to do if they are elected. But so far Children’s issues have been almost ignored.
In response to this, Children England have launched a campaign to promote a new national discussion – urging party leaders to tell us what they’ll do to help some of our society’s most vulnerable after May 7th.
Here’s what Children England have to say:
‘This General Election should be the first in which the nation publicly asks its politicians how they will live up to their responsibility to be good parents for our most vulnerable children.
Among the millions of children and young people who are affected by government policies every day, one group in particular rely more directly on government than any other – the 93,495 children in care. For these children and young people, too-often invisible in political debates and without a vote of their own, the state has a special responsibility.
Anyone seeking government office, not least hoping to be Prime Minister, takes on a ‘corporate’ responsibility for all children in care. We believe it is our duty as voters to hold our politicians to democratic account for their role as corporate parents to these children. If we don’t, who will?’
With the last Leader’s debate scheduled for April 30th, will you sign the petition and help call for a question on Children in Care?
