Our impact in October

By 38 Degrees team

Here are the latest powerful updates about all the brilliant things the 38 Degrees community has achieved this month. We couldn’t do any of this without you. Every action, every donation, and every word of support makes these moments possible.

Trump, Big Pharma, and our NHS

Over 259,000 of us took action to fight back against the bullying trade threats from Trump and Big Pharma. Together with our friends at Just Treatment, we delivered a giant petition and a big fake cheque to the Department of Health, demanding the Government reject Trump’s pressure that could force a 25% price hike on NHS medicines. We were all over the papers: The Mirror, The Standard, KentOnline, The Eastern Daily Press, Ireland Live, The Irish News, The Independent, and The National!

Claire’s victory for survivors across the country

The Government is finally scrapping a law that lets known abusive parents have contact with their children, thanks to the incredible work of people like Claire Throssell MBE, Women’s Aid, and the 100,000+ supporters who signed Claire’s petition. This change is Claire’s promise to her sons, Jack and Paul Sykes, who were tragically killed by their own abusive father 11 years ago, and it means that no other family should have to endure that nightmare.

Welcoming refugees

Over 4,500 supporters ordered and chipped in for our “Refugees Welcome” posters branded with our national flags. I could tell you why this was powerful, but I think a direct quote from a supporter sums it up much better than I could:

“I put the poster up in our window and my husband was a bit nervous we would get a brick through the window. Instead, we had a knock in the door from an Iranian asylum seeker who lived 2 doors up in an asylum seeker house. He was quite emotional and said that every time he walked past our house, he felt so happy because of the poster. He now has his right to remain and is moving away, but he was grateful of the love shown.”

A 💩 cake (yes, really!)

Nearly 50,000 of us signed a spoof “congratulations” card and last week we delivered it in person to Southern Water’s CEO, Lawrence Gosden… complete with a giant poo emoji cake! 🎂💩 Our stunt exposed their absurd accounting tricks which saw Gosden’s pay package nearly double to £1.4m, despite the Government’s bonus ban on sewage polluting water bosses. With cameras rolling and locals watching, our bold, cheeky message was impossible to ignore.

Free the 15 penguins

Did you know fifteen penguins are trapped at Sea Life London in a dark basement? No daylight, no fresh air, and a pool just a few feet deep! So, thousands of us absolutely flooded Sea Life London’s reviews with 1-star ratings, demanding they free the penguins. We must have ruffled a few feathers because they’ve temporarily closed their review site!

A heartfelt thank you

Finally, we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has chipped in lately – whether it’s a few pounds for a specific stunt or by donating monthly. We’re facing a challenging time as a world, as a country, and across the non-profit sector. So every time you chip in a fiver or increase your monthly contribution, you’re not just funding a campaign – you’re literally building a powerful alternative and a better future. Thank you.
